The links from some images start a second browser window to display the linked image rather than opening the new image file in the original window. With a second window opened it is possible to switch between the new image and the original page just by clicking on the taskbar at the edge of the screen. This is quicker than waiting for pages to reload in a single window and when the original window is scrolled to view text down the page the scrolled position is not lost in moving between text and image.
Some versions of Internet Explorer do not correctly interpret the instruction to open a second page and instead display the link in the existing window.
