INTRODUCTION

Communication devices and laptop computers on DAESSY mounting assemblies are normally attached in a manner that allows the mounted device or computer to be quickly and easily taken off the mount. In a few cases this quick removal makes use of a specially designed plastic holder that the device slips into but the most frequently used method is the DAESSY Quick Release Plate and Quick Release Base. The device may be attached directly to a specific plate, attached to the plate by means of adapter brackets or held in a customized holder that is itself attached to the plate. In most cases the plate or holder has rubber feet that allow the attached device to be used on a desk or table when not on the wheelchair mount. Alternatively the device may be transferred to the DAESSY Desk Mount for use away from the wheelchair. The DESK MOUNT is particularly applicable for scanning or pointer access devices which are frequently tilted for use.

NOTE

Some of the communication devices and laptop computers mentioned in this section may no longer be available. They are included because plates, adapters or holders were developed and are still available. The manufacturers of the named devices are listed at the end of this section.

The DAESSY Quick Release system is not used on mounting assemblies supplied by the Prentke Romich Company; these mounting assemblies use the Prentke Romich Company quick release mechanism which is not compatible with the DAESSY system.

Direct Attachment to DAESSY Quick Release/Mounting Plate
Standard Mounting Plate The following communication devices all have threaded screw holes on the underside which allow these devices to be screwed directly onto their own specific Quick Release Plate:
Digivox, Dynavox DV4, Dynavox MT4, Hollycom, Link, Macaw 3*, Optimist, SynMaac.
Adapter Attachment to DAESSY Quick Release Plate

A specific adapter or holder may be necessary to attach the communication device to a Quick Release Plate for use on a DAESSY Quick Release Base.  Devices requiring specific adapters include Alphasmart, Dynamo, Dynamyte 3100, Dynawrite, Dynavox 3100, Enkidu Impact Handheld 900 series, Impact Tablet XL, Impact Handheld (original), E-Talk, Gemini, Mercury, MiniMerc, PRC devices Alphatalker, Deltatalker, Liberator, Vanguard, Vantage, Pathfinder, Springboard etc., Tech Talk, Tech Scan etc.

Adapter and QRP1 PRC Device Adapter & Quick Release Plate 

An adapter which clamps permanently onto the wedge shaped block on the back of a Prentke Romich device is used to attach the device to a DAESSY Quick Release Plate. When this adapter is in place these devices cannot be attached to the Prentke Romich Company quick release mechanism.

When the Prentke Romich Company quick release mechanism QRM-1 will be used it is necessary to specify in the order for a DAESSY Mounting Assembly that it is "No Quick Release" (without Quick Release Base).

 

Dynavox adapter Dynavox System Devices

The Dynavox 2 and DynaMyte may be attached to a DAESSY Quick Release Plate by two stainless steel brackets which slide on the edges of the device. The brackets and plate are not interchangeable between the two devices; the illustration shows the brackets and plate for the Dynavox 2, the DynaMyte system is similar but smaller.

The Dynavox 3100 may have to be attached to the DAESSY Quick Release Plate by an adapter that is screwed directly to the underside of the device. Alternatively, when the manufacturer's mounting plate is already fastened to the Dynavox 3100 it may be attached to the Horizontal Tube on the DAESSY Mounting Assembly by using the manufacturer's quick release mechanism. When this will be done it is necessary to specify in the order for the DAESSY Mounting Assembly that it is "No Quick Release" (without Quick Release Base).

Macaw Brackets Early Macaw Devices
 
The early model Macaws are attached to a DAESSY Quick Release Plate by two stainless steel brackets which are fastened to the corner bolts of the case. The Macaw 3 which can be directly attached by screws may also be attached with these brackets.
 
Laptop Custom Made Holder
'PC COMPATIBLE' LAPTOPS
PC compatible (IBM compatible) laptop computers are available in a large range of makes and models. It is not possible to have specific holders for each one.
The PC Laptop Holder uses a cut-to-size polycarbonate plastic base plate attached to a Quick Release Plate with custom bent stainless steel clips at suitable locations around the case of the laptop and adhesive backed Velcro to hold the computer. 
For this holder the purchaser must provide accurate sizes for the length and width of the laptop and for the height of the case at the potential clip locations.

Plastic holders with a tubing connector to allow them to be attached to the horizontal tube of a DAESSY mounting assembly are available for the Chatbox & Dynawrite

The LightWriter may be attached by modifying the plastic holder available from the supplier. Contact DAESSY for details on this option.

ATTACHING DEVICES NOT PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED

Many communication devices are not included in this list. Lightweight devices can often be attached by Velcro or double sided adhesive tape to a plastic plate fastened to the DAESSY Quick Release Plate. Other devices may have feet screwed onto the back of the case or may have screws fastening the case together. For these devices a plastic plate with matching holes can be supplied for attaching with longer screws. Contact DAESSY for details on this option.
